Music Biz 2017 - Day 4 Blog

And just like that Music Biz 2017 is over. 4 days of intensive workshops, seminars, and networking, concluded with an award luncheon that honored Reba McEntire, Paula Abdul, Adele, Lukas Graham, Maren Morris, and Hamilton Mixtape.

There isn't a better music conference in the world in my opinion, so here is my take away from the final day. I hope these notes will help you on your journey.

  • Record labels are not spending much time in the artist development business, rather like finshed products or close to it. Touring is where a lot of artist develop. Perform as much as possible. You're going to make majority of your money on live shows.
  • You can be your own publisher, just make sure you copyright your song, and join a PRO such as ASCAP, BMI, SESAC.
  • Persistence and Politeness is essential to your longevity in the music industry.
  • If you are an manager find every opportunity to join conversations to talk about your artists. Nobody else is going to believe in your artist if you don't.
  • If you are an artist, a good stage name is 80% of your marketing. Is your artist name working for or against you?
  • Know how to communicate what and who you are. People have 5-10 seconds to process early information.
  • As important as every aspect that goes into the music industry is, it all begins with a song!

Thank you Music Biz 2017 for an educating, motivating, and inspiring week. The entire organization did a fantastic job. For more information on the Music Business Association, check out their website
